‘oppenheimer’ & ‘poor thing’ dominates the 81st golden globe

81st annual Golden Globes marked the official kickoff of the 2024 awards season, with Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer dominating the night by securing five trophies, including Best Motion Picture Drama.

Cillian Murphy received the award for Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his role in the global smash period film. The three-hour epic, directed by Christopher Nolan, delves into the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project that led to the creation of the atomic bomb.

Lily Gladstone made history by winning Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for her performance in Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese. Searchlight’s Poor Things pulled off an upset by taking home the award for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy over other contenders, including the highly successful Barbie.

Emma Stone, star of Poor Things, clinched the Female Actor in a Motion Picture Musical award, her second Golden Globe win in eight career nominations. Paul Giamatti won Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Focus Features’ The Holdovers.

Barbie, despite not winning the Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category, received the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, and its original song “What Was I Made For?” won Best Original Song. The Boy and the Heron, Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature in a decade, took home the award for Best Animated Motion Picture.

On the television front, HBO’s Succession continued its success by winning Best TV Series Drama for the third time and securing four wins overall. Netflix led in the television category with five trophies, including three for Beef and one each for The Crown and Armageddon.

Ricky Gervais won the night’s first-time category, Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, for his Netflix special Armageddon. The ceremony, hosted by Jo Koy at the Beverly Hilton, featured turnover and changes in the Golden Globes’ structure over the past year
